Japan are one of Asian football's great success stories, having developed from a part-time national team in the 1980s into a consistent World Cup presence and AFC Asian Cup winner (1992, 2000, 2004, 2011). The Samurai Blue reached the round of 16 in 2010 and 2018 and the quarter-finals in 2022, defeating Germany and Spain in an extraordinary group stage.
